History of the Society

From the origins of modern hernia surgery to the birth of ISHAWS

The origins of modern hernia surgery

It was 1979 when the French surgeons J.P. Chevrel, J. Rives and R. Stoppa began the modern history of hernia and abdominal wall surgery.

A simple meeting of friends thus became the founding of GREPA, a scientific association and a model of reference that went beyond the French borders and became a guide for the training of many Italian surgeons.
The appointment of G. Trivellini as president then marked a path of growth and commitment to research in Italy as well.

From Europe to an international network

From Europe to the world: in 1998 the European Hernia Society was founded; today it has more than 700 surgeons from 13 European countries, organised in National Chapters.

Together with its sister societies, such as the American Hernia Society, the Asian Pacific Hernia Society, the Australian Hernia Society and the Afro and Middle East Hernia Society, the EHS then created a worldwide network whose showcase was the First World Congress of Abdominal Wall Surgery, held in Milan in 2015.

The birth of ISHAWS

The Italian Society of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery was founded in Milan in December 2003 as the Italian Chapter of the European Hernia Society, on the proposal of three founding members: G.P. Campanelli, F. Corcione and V. Mandalà, with P. Bocchi as its first National Delegate.

ISHAWS, the Italian Chapter, is the National Chapter with the largest number of members, steadily growing, all sharing a specific interest in abdominal wall disease and surgery.
